Exhibition catalogue — From Renoir to Monet

        From Renoir to Monet

With essays by various specialists, the catalogue provides a comprehensive overview of the qualities of the Impressionist paintings from Dr Rau’s renowned collection in this field, including works by Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Auguste Renoir, Gustave Caillebotte and several others. A selection of highlights from the MNAHA’s collection also introduces the reader to masters such as Théo van Rysselberghe, Ferdinand Hodler, Laurits Tuxen and Otto Scholderer, who worked during the same period or even in the immediate vicinity of the Impressionists, providing a broader context for the shared desire to visualise a changing world through fresh eyes.

        Talking Pictures

In the exhibition Talking Pictures, on view at the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck from 27 September 2026 to 4 April 2027, thirty masterpieces from the National Museum of Archaeology, History and Art, Luxembourg (MNAHA), engage in a dialogue with nineteen highlights from the Collection Rau for UNICEF. Through stunning imagery, they tell stories and recount history from antiquity to the Baroque era. An exhibition catalogue has been published to accompany the exhibition and can be purchased online.

The life of Christ unfolds before us like a film, in vivid scenes on precious ivory panels and grand altars. With the rise of Humanism and the Counter-Reformation, the narrative intensifies to focus on the decisive moment: the facial expressions and gestures of the figures speak directly to our emotions, evoking compassion, sorrow, or ecstatic joy, as exemplified by the exhibition’s title image Bacchus, Venus, and Cupid by Rosso Fiorentino.

In the dramatic light of Baroque painting, gods, heroes, and saints take on a monumental presence. From Troy to Judea to Mount Olympus, a polyphonic procession of images unfolds—full of passion, pleasure, and suffering. From the second half of the 17th century onward, the focus shifts: historical subjects recede, while landscapes and scenes of everyday life gain prominence.

Nature emerges as a powerful presence, while genre painting turns its attention to everyday life—at times serious, at times humorous.

        Collection Rau

Dr. Gustav Rau, an economist, tropical medicine specialist and philanthropist, was born in Stuttgart in 1922. Over four decades, he assembled one of the most significant private art collections in Europe. On his death in 2002, he left his outstanding collection to the children’s aid organisation UNICEF, with the wish that his most valuable works be made publicly accessible for 18 years.

Until 2026, the collection is housed in the specially curated Kunstkammer Rau at the Arp Museum in Remagen (Germany). Since 2008, a rotating selection – each offering a different perspective – has been exhibited from roughly 275 paintings and sculptures. These include European paintings from the 15th century to the early 20th century, as well sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.

The Collection Rau for UNICEF boasts a wealth of Late Impressionist works, including masterpieces by Paula Modersohn-Becker, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Eduard Vuillard, Gustave Caillebotte and Claude Monet. The finest works from this group are on display in this exhibition, at the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart.

Works by Old Masters from both the Collection Rau for UNICEF and the museum’s own holdings are shown at the Arp Museum in an exhibition entitled Sprechende Bilder 1400–1800. Meisterwerke aus dem Nationalmuseum Luxemburg from 27 September 2026 to 4 April 2027.
